Are Corruption and Taxation Really Harmful to Growth? Firm Level Evidence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Exploiting a unique data set containing information on the estimated bribe payments of Ugandan firms, we study the relationship between bribery payments, taxes and firm growth over the period 1995-97. Using industry-location averages to circumvent the potential problem of endogeneity, and to deal with issues of measurement error, we find that both the rate of taxation and bribery are negatively correlated with firm growth. For the full data set, a one-percentage point increase in the bribery rate is associated with a reduction in firm growth of three percentage points, an effect that is about three times greater than that of taxation. Moreover, after outliers are excluded, we find a much greater negative impact of bribery on growth, while the effect of taxation is considerably reduced. This provides some validation for firm-level theories of corruption which posit that corruption retards the development process to an even greater extent than taxation. * Columbia Business School. 614 Uris Hall, Columbia University, New York, NY, 10027. متن کاملThe Cost of Doing Business Firms’ Experience with Corruption in Uganda
Corruption is perceived by firms in Uganda to be one of the most serious impediments to conducting business. Despite this, little is known about the incidence and cost of corruption in the private sector, nor about its effect on firm performance. A major reason for the lack of information is the fact that until recently it was considered impossible systematically to measure corruption. However,...
متن کاملPlans , Prices , and Corruption : The Soviet Firm Under Partial Centralization , 1930 to 1990
The level of corruption in an economy is generally thought to influence economic growth adversely. We show that the performance of the Soviet economy was affected not only by the level of corruption but also by its quality, that is, how corrupt incomes were used. In the context of a partially centralized economy, changes in a government control mechanism influenced the quality of corruption and...

Mean...
متن کاملIs Tax Evasion Beneficial or Harmful to Growth?
[Abstract] Is tax evasion beneficial or harmful to growth? We approach this question by extending Persson and Tabellini’s (1994) growth model to a plausible world where individuals differ not only in terms of their skill in earning income but also in terms of their skill in concealing income from the tax authority. The Persson-Tabellini model identifies a fundamental tradeoff for redistribution...
